I NEVER KNEW THAT!
I am indebted to Bob Bowker who very kindly donated eleven SD sales brochures. Bob was an apprentice at the same time as myself in the 1950's/60's.and then worked as a Jig & Tool designer. After leaving S&D Bob had two further spells with the Company, first in the Sales Department and then as a designer. Now retired he lives in Porthcawl, Wales.
The brochures are numbered 390,394, 402, 411,412,417, 418, 419,421 & 427 with a further one featuring the Pakamatic body on a Ford 'D' series chassis/cab. Brochure 390 shows a 'T' type Pakamatic with SD 1964 as the Registration number. Similarly brochure 402 bears the registration number SD 1965. Four of the brochures (numbered 417 - 419 & 421 relate to the Fore & Aft tipper, whilst the remainder feature the Pakamatic.
The Fore & Aft Tipper is referred to as "Double Ram". This re-design presumably came in around 1966. The diagrams below show the difference.

Previous design :- Twin rams operate on centre of body New design: Single ram operates on end of subframe.
The second ram for forward tipping was mounted within the subframe.
Naturally the body was offered with the highly popular Powerpress which increased the capacity of the body considerably.
The Fore & Aft Tipper continued for many years for more dense refuse and was very uncomplicated mechanically.

The second surprise for me was in brochure number 402 where S&D were offering mechanical loading into the Pakamatic body for standard domestic dustbins. Dating from 1965 this was long before the introduction of "wheelie" bins became commonplace.
The brochure claims an 80% reduction in dust emission and that the time cycle for emptying bins is quoted as 6 - 7 seconds allowing 200 bins per hour to be emptied.
"The reduction in fatigue ... enables the work to be carried out easily by more elderly operators."
A door provided in the side of the body allowed bulky items to be loaded. I wonder how sales went on this innovation?
So, thank you Bob for the brochures and information about these SD developments.
